About Today Readings

Hebrews 4:12-16. Your words, Lord, are spirit and life – Psalm 18(19):8-10, 15. Mark 2:13-17.

Your light must shine in the sight of men

Bianca: Not a great career move, Jesus – calling Levi! A traitor, stand-over merchant and thief. And then going along with your mates to eat with him. Just think of the reputational damage.

Jesus: Well, in God’s eyes, everyone is reputationally damaged! But God sent me particularly to people with a bad reputation. They are more likely to listen to God. And my followers are called to do the same. Do you want to follow my way, Bianca?

Bianca: Depends. What do you mean?

Jesus: Just think of the people with whom you would be really embarrassed at being seen at dinner. People who are homeless, perhaps. Or people out of gaol after abusing children. Or people who have had a recent gender change. There’s no shortage of people, is there, if you really want to follow my way. Do you?

Bianca: Let’s chat about this in private, Jesus, you’re embarrassing me.
