About Today Readings

Immaculate Heart of Mary

2 Corinthians 5:14-21. The Lord is kind and merciful – Psalm 102(103):1-4, 4-8, 11-12. Matthew 5:33-37.

Mary stored up all these things in her heart

Today is the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. We are used to seeing the word immaculate on the windscreens of second-hand cars and in advertisements for real estate. It means perfect. There’s no such thing as a perfect car but Mary’s heart is another matter. Her beautiful heart was also a broken one. She knew pain. Nobody wants to see their children die, let alone in the appalling way that Jesus was tortured. Mary’s innermost heart was deep and strong enough to enable her to stay by his side. Today’s Gospel tells the story of Jesus being lost in the Temple when he was 12 years old. It lets us know that Mary was baffled and ‘did not understand what he meant’. There is hope for us all here, especially when we find Jesus beyond our comprehension. Like Mary, we are called to ponder the mysterious ways of God every day, starting on this winter Saturday.
