About Today Readings

Hebrews 11:1-7. I will praise your name forever, Lord – Psalm 144(145):2-5, 10-11. Mark 9:2-13.

Jesus is the point of encounter

‘Whiter than any earthly bleacher could make them.’ Jesus’ robes become something beyond the bounds of earth as he is transfigured. What is this moment? The heavens break in. But again, what is this moment? What does it mean?

Peter’s remarks suggest a moment of wonder and awe; a fearsome encounter for him and James and John. His remark about remaining there on the mountain drops away. Jesus with the three disciples descends the mountain. Whatever this has been it does not interrupt Jesus’ mission in the world.

We are reminded, then, that Jesus brings the divine into human life. He is the point of encounter, the person with whom we relate as human persons but also as ones made in the image and likeness of God. Formed to connect with the sacred, but to live earthly, human lives. Where do the heavens break in for you?
