About Today Readings

Hebrews 4:12-16. Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life – Psalm 18(19):8-10, 15. Mark 2:13-17.

Sharing quiet moments with Jesus

There’s nothing quite like a Saturday in summer, with a long evening to share with friends or to enjoy the slow falling of dusk on our own.

Today’s Gospel celebrates what we now call downtime. Jesus is in his own home having dinner with a colourful group of locals. If only we could have a transcript of the conversation. Of course, the important people criticise him for upsetting their privileged view of the world.

Jesus’ response seems so calm. He is happy to rest with the sick. When we read in Hebrews that the word of God is so ‘alive and active’ that it can ‘slip through the space where the soul is divided from the spirit’, we are reminded of the many subtle and perceptive conversations Jesus had with people when he got past their defences. God can get past our defences too, even on a quiet Saturday.
