Micah 2:1-5. Do not forget the poor, O Lord! – Ps 9B(10):1-4, 7-8, 14. Matthew 12:14-21.
Remember the poor
For as much as our first reading today cries woe on those who plan iniquity, in truth few people think of themselves as villains. And many of the structures of capitalism actively obscure the harm that we might be doing to others. We don’t see the underpaid labourers behind the goods we buy at remarkable discounts on Amazon or the future generations who will be harmed by our continued insistence on fossil fuels. The overwhelming majority of the world lives in poverty, without proper access to the most basic needs of life, and yet those of us who are not in that situation chafe at the idea that we might live in a ‘time of evil’.
In our psalm response we beg God, ‘Do not forget the poor’. But as we make this prayer today, we are ourselves reminded of those all around us who do not have enough. And perhaps we’re also invited by God to consider our ongoing role in the story of others’ salvation.
