Let the little children alone and do not stop them from coming to me

There are horror stories about pre-Vatican II Sacramental preparation. In the days of a Eucharistic fast from midnight, my class was told the story of a child who drank some water and was struck dead when receiving Communion.

After Sunday Mass, I once stood at traffic lights behind two older men. One said to another, ‘I hate it when they thank you for coming to Mass, when they know full well we will go to hell if we don’t’.

Fear-inspired teaching served only to keep people away from Jesus. It is to be hoped that today’s children are helped to go to Jesus and talk to him as a friend and companion. Children need to know that Jesus wants to hear about their day, what made them happy or sad, what worried or frightened them.
