God works with our authenticity

The words of the prophet Isaiah in today’s Gospel help us to understand who Jesus was and how he was able to change lives at the deepest level. The prophet says that the servant of God ‘will not brawl or shout’. It is easy to overlook these words. They remind us that God’s work is not advanced a single inch by aggression, violence or attention-seeking. Nor is it helped by taking advantage of those who are struggling: ‘he will not break the crushed reed.’ Instead, ‘he will proclaim the true faith to the nations’. How will he do this? God works with our authenticity, integrity, service and humility. Imagine God saying about each of us, ‘here is my servant whom I have chosen’. What would The Lord point to in our lives this day or this week to justify that description? What are the things we have done to give gentle expression to our ‘true faith’?
