St Romuald
2 Corinthians 12:1-10. Taste and see the goodness of the Lord – Ps 33(34):8-13. Matthew 6:24-34.
Do not worry about tomorrow: your holy Father knows your needs
Today’s scripture readings combine a sense of wonder with the discipline of penance. The sense of wonder with the lilies of the field and the birds of the air, in the passage from Matthew, contrasts with the penitential flavour in Paul’s ‘boast’ to the Corinthians. ‘I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ.’ Today is the feast day, and anniversary of death, of St Romuald of Ravenna, who lived 1000 years ago. For several years he wandered through northern Italy and southern France reforming monasteries and hermitages. It seems he was strict on silence and reliant on the providence of God. Perhaps both our readings today formed his spirituality. Lilies and birds, and creation all around, shout the goodness of the Lord. Enjoy it in silence, Romuald may have said. The psalm today invites us to taste and see the goodness of the Lord.
