About Today Readings

Apocalypse 11:4-12. Blessed be the Lord, my Rock! – Psalm 143(144):1-2, 9-10. Luke 20:27-40.

The bond we have with God transcends death

Is it possible for someone who’s married to reach heaven? A perfunctory reading of today’s Gospel reading would say not: ‘those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age and to the resurrection of the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage’. But of course, I’d like to think that my personal choice to get married doesn’t mean I’m no longer worthy of eternal life with God.

What Jesus seems to be saying in today’s reading is those questions such as that the Sadducees asked mistake worldly bonds for divine bonds. We don’t know what eternal life with God will be like, but it won’t be like our lives here on earth. The bond we have with God is stronger than the bond of marriage, and transcends our death.
