God has called us into an eternal relationship
It is a curious pronouncement Jesus is heard to make in today’s Gospel: ‘Everyone who says a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.’ It sends a shiver down the spine to think of an unforgivable sin. In some sense, though, Luke’s Jesus is suggesting possibilities to his audience. You may reject me now, he seems to say, but don’t reject the Holy Spirit whom I will leave. To reject the ongoing possibility of relationship with God holds a finality. The way this passage is framed, Jesus is giving his disciples pause to consider their response in the face of death for their faith. Ultimately, it is not the judgment of this world that counts but our relationship with the One who created us and calls us into eternal relationship.
