About Today Readings

St Eusebius of Vercelli; St Peter Julian Eymard

Leviticus 25:1, 8-17. O God, let all the nations praise you! – Ps 66(67):2-3, 5, 7-8. Matthew 14:1-12.

This is to be a jubilee for you

Sound the trumpet! Jubilee! Pope Francis named 2025 as a Jubilee, in the Jewish tradition of the holy 50th years. But what was considered ‘holy’? It was not about walking through holy doors, visiting the Temple or going to Confession. The Bible is much more practical. It is about forgiving debts, freeing slaves and leaving the land to rest. It is living out God’s justice in our actions. We could say celebrating and restoring the relationships between ourselves, God, others and all of creation. So how can we do that today? Perhaps in some small ways. We could wipe away a longstanding grudge we have had with someone. We could compost our food scraps rather than pollute our landfills. Perhaps we could even do simple acts of kindness to others, for no reason at all. Let’s live the Jubilee.
