How open are we to God’s call?
Our anticipation grows as Christmas approaches. Ahaz, in our first reading, meets the suggestion he ask for a sign with trepidation. Yet Isaiah is confident that the Lord wishes to give a sign. Not a fleeting sign but a child, a son to be called ‘God-is-with-us’. Not only a sign, then, but a presence sharing life with us. The maiden to bear the child, Mary, meets the news with trepidation too. Hers seems a most natural response. There is disturbance and doubt. By Mary’s cooperation with grace there is also openness and self-offering.
The openness and self-offering of so many mothers through history, and in our own lives, is a great blessing. As we contemplate Mary’s ‘yes’ in today’s Gospel, we might consider those opportunities in our life where we are called to be open to offer something of ourselves. What might the life-giving opportunities be at this time of my life?
