St Peter Canisius

Song of Songs 2:8-14 / Zephaniah 3:14-18. Cry out with joy in the Lord, you holy ones; sing a new song to him – Psalm 32(33):2-3, 11-12, 20-21. Luke 1:39-45.

Share in God’s joy

The cause of Jesus’ coming among us. To join us in our misery? Yes. To save us from our sin? Yes. To reveal God’s nature to us? Yes. To give us an example of perfect love (and frighteningly, challenge us to reflect this as best we can)? Of course. But all of these are incomplete without God’s long game. Jesus came that we might, when all is said and done, share in God’s joy. Jesus’ incarnation is God’s answer to our estrangement from him, he wants to restore us to friendship with him. Scripture speaks of a great wedding banquet, a festival without end as God rejoices in his creatures and we in him. This is why we, through all the travails of life, must never become dour Christians.
