Jeremiah 11:18-20. Lord, my God, I take shelter in you – Ps 7:2-3, 9-12. John 7:40-52.
Who is Jesus?
People in the crowds wonder about Jesus’s identity. A prophet? The Christ? How can this be, if he is from Nazareth? There is disagreement, and the reactions are strong. Some want to arrest him; some want to keep listening. Those charged with the arresting don’t want to in the end, because whatever Jesus is saying, they have not heard the likes of it before.
Who is Jesus? As Christians this might be the important question in our lives. We know what the creed says, and that’s important. We know that it is Jesus who saves us. We can risk being caught at the level of abstraction. We can become enamoured, distracted or even confused by tightly wound descriptions. Which is not to say they are wrong or necessarily unhelpful. But they are ways of establishing our relationship with Jesus, not the terminus of that relationship.
