St Vincent

Jesus’ relatives were convinced he was out of his mind
St Vincent Pallotti died this day in Rome back in 1850. He was only 55 but his zeal for the apostolate had become famous. Once he dressed as a woman to approach a dying man who had threatened to shoot the first priest who came to him. Was Vincent out of his mind? Former friends of Jesus thought he was out of his mind, and his family came to rescue him. The first reading today recalls the beginning of the reign of David as king of Israel, replacing King Saul. As David begins a new reign in Israel surrounded by family and blessed by God, Jesus breaks his own family ties to begin a new reign of God that will go far beyond the boundaries of family, and Israel. Thankfully, the followers of Vincent, the Pallottines, have moved beyond Rome, to announce and build the reign of God in different countries on earth.
