We thank those whose witness enriches our faith

Today we celebrate the feast of Mary Magdalene, the first witness of the resurrection and ‘apostle to the apostles’. It’s an important day for women in the Church, particularly for those who have dedicated their lives to studying and understanding theology. Those of us who have worked with, and been taught by, female theologians know the unique insights they can bring to the Gospel stories and our understanding of God.

And yet, sadly, there are too few women offering those insights at the highest levels of our Church. While some advances have been made in recent years, we still have a long way to go in truly appreciating and incorporating the witness of women.

So, we give thanks today for the women like Mary Magdalene who continue to enrich our faith lives through their witness, and we also pray that more people might encounter and appreciate their teaching and wisdom in the future.
