About Today Readings

Ss John Fisher & Thomas More

2 Chronicles 24:17-25. For ever I will keep my love for him – Psalm 88(89):4-5, 29-34. Matthew 6:24-34.

When do we speak out against wrongdoing

The chosen people of God can be as prone to political power-struggling and violence as any other men and women. We know the lengths to which a person will go to achieve his or her career goals, whose victims are poisoned or shot. Fisher and Moore were both executed for standing up against the prevailing power. According to Global Witness, between 2008 and 2018, 1427 environmental activists were killed, among them Chico Mendes (a Brazilian rubber tapper, trade union leader and environmentalist) and José Cláudio Ribeiro da Silva and his wife Maria do Espírito Santo da Silva (also Brazilian, also defending the Amazon rainforest). When do we speak out against wrongdoing and injustice? Whose courage and vision do we rely on?
