About Today Readings

St Fidelis of Sigmaringen

Acts 9:31-42. What return can I make to the Lord for all that he gives to me? – Psalm 115(116):12-17. John 6:60-69.

Who shall we go to? You are the Holy One of God

There’s a story of an old card player who was losing money in gaming house. Another patron was watching, and says to the player, ‘They’re cheating you.’ The player gives him a smile. ‘I know’, he says. ‘But it’s the only game in town.’

Consider, then, the apostles in today’s Gospel reading. After watching many of their fellow disciples leave Jesus and return to their former way of life, they are asked why they stayed. ‘To whom shall we go?’ they respond.

One might argue that the card player is trapped in a pursuit that’s ultimately doomed, while the disciples have their sights fixed on redemption. But I wonder if both stories involve the realisation that living a good life means enjoying the journey as much as the destination. The apostles may have hoped for redemption, but I suspect they also loved their life with Jesus. For them, that was ‘the only game in town’.
