St Francis de Sales
2 Samuel 1:1-4, 11-12, 17, 19, 23-27. Let us see your face, Lord, and we shall be saved – Ps 79(80):2-3, 5-7. Mark 3:20-21.
He is out of his mind
Today’s reading is short and ends on a strident exclamation from Jesus’ family. One can imagine the scene they’re looking at – their relative, swamped by people wanting to hear from him and be near him. What on earth is going on?
What they’re not doing is listening to his words. Without really opening themselves up to Jesus, they can’t understand why so many people are being called to follow him. It’s only by listening that we can truly see who Jesus is.
It’s apt that today is the Feast of St Francis de Sales, patron of writers, journalists, the Catholic press and deaf people. We pray that those who write and preach the Word of God today might find open hearts rather than being judged without their words being heard.
