What is it that love demands of me right now?
‘Love one another as I love you.’ I understand that we need to discern, as individuals and communities, how our love should play out in our relationships with each other, and to provide some consistency in advice for those who are struggling. But sometimes, for me, the easiest thing to do is to sit and consider at any moment: what is it that love demands of me right now?
One of my favourite Catholic figures is Walter Ciszek SJ. His wisdom on this matter was hard won, suffering years of imprisonment in Russia. But he learned in that time such simplicity in his discipleship: ‘There was but a single vision, God, who was all in all; there was but one will that directed all things, God’s will. I had only to see it, to discern it in every circumstance in which I found myself, and let myself be ruled by it.’
