The Conversion of St Paul
Acts 22:3-16. Go out to all the world, and tell the Good News – Psalm 116(117). Mark 16:15-18.
Never give up, for we know what Jesus can do
How many of us have prayed or are praying for our children’s or family members’ conversions? How often have we wished that, like Saul, there will be a miraculous conversion, and they will know Jesus and realise he loves them unconditionally.
One of the things I love about this reading is the conversation between Saul and Jesus. Jesus wanted Saul to know him, and he chose to do something dramatic. However, the conversation they had after Paul had been struck by the blinding light, was not that of an angry God or king, demanding things of Saul. It was intimate and familiar, like a child with his trusted father. ‘What am I to do, Lord?’ ‘Get up and go to Damascus’.
It continued with Saul asking advice, while still in shock I would guess, and Jesus reassuring him with directions. Jesus wants our families and friends to know him too, and he loves that we ask him for that. So never give up, for we know what Jesus can do. Saul tortured and killed Jesus’ followers, and he was chosen, forgiven and became one of the greatest followers of Jesus; the greatest saint.
St Paul, please intercede for those we love, that like you, their hearts will be filled with love for Jesus, and help us to continue loving and trusting, while we pray.
