About Today Readings

Ruth 2:1-3, 8-11; 4:13-17. See how the Lord blesses those who fear him – Psalm 127(128):1-5. Matthew 23:1-12.

Lord, help me to do your work

Oh ego! How often does that trip me up! How often do I tell myself I am doing God’s work, when really I’m just serving my own ego? I find it so hard to escape. I like to tell myself I am doing something for God’s glory, but most of the time it’s about my own glory. Making cumbersome loads for others to bear is a human trait, it is not from God. It comes from our own insecurity. The remedy, perhaps, is prayer. In prayer, I can listen to what God is asking of me, instead of buying into a whole set of expectations that I imagine is required and imposing those standards on others as well.

Lord, help me to do your work without getting carried away with self-obsession.
