Genesis 18:1-15. The Lord has remembered his mercy – Luke 1:46-50, 53-55. Matthew 8:5-17.
We are invited to see just how generous God is
‘Is anything too wonderful for the Lord?’ When the Lord appears to Abraham as three men at the Oak of Mamre, Abraham doesn’t think so. Abraham seems to intuit that this is the Lord, and his response is big-hearted hospitality. The lavish meal of loaves, milk and meat contrasts with the harshness of desert heat.
The Lord is generous in a way that shocks and surprises Abraham, and even more Sarah. The possibility of a child makes her laugh, after all she’s surely no longer able. Yet God makes it possible. The Lord transforms their situation.
Jesus does the same for those he encounters. He cures the servant of an occupying soldier, astonished by the expression of that soldier’s faith. We are invited to see just how generous God is, often in unexpected ways, and how generous our response should be. Big-hearted and faithful.
