The importance of repentance

Jesus is quick to correct the belief that those who suffer terribly must be terribly sinful. There is no ranking of sins or quota of suffering doled out according to severity of sinfulness. For Jesus, the point is repentance. The need is to understand the importance of seeking repentance – of a genuine contrition and desire for forgiveness. This is where there is hope and life. Like the glimmer of hope that remains with the fig tree which has been pretty well useless so far at bearing fruit. A little more care and tenderness, and next year . . . next year it might just work. This is the patience and compassion we ask of God and what we hope we can extend to one another. To try and try again. To forgive and forgive again.
