About Today Readings

Ss Cosmas and Damian

Ecclesiastes 11:9 – 12:8. In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge – Psalm 89(90):3-6, 12-14, 17. Luke 9:43-45.

‘We are often bewildered by life’

From random events to sudden losses, and even things said by the people we trust. The readings for today show us how the things of this earth provide little by way of any assurance or security. Thus, our attempts to make sense of this world using the things of this world end up being an exercise in futility. Going further still, we may sometimes find that even the hints we are getting from God appear not to make sense, which may compound our sense of bewilderment.

In spite of this bewilderment, the psalm rings out with a reminder, to cling constantly to God as our refuge, for then, and only then, can there be a means to endure the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.
