Shake the dust off your feet

I’m interested in the ways the disciples of the early church behaved. Jesus had instructed them to leave and to shake the dust off their feet when faced with an uncompromising set of people. We are not called to remain stuck, wasting our energy on the determinedly unconvinced.

I sometimes think about this when I venture onto social media. So often I see flame wars here – soul-destroying discussions driven by two people craving the tiny dopamine hit of a comment response and who both need to have the last word.

Sometimes this is a religion-versus-atheism discussion, but I’ve also seen online comments wars between two fervent believers who disagree on a minor point of theology. God calls us to be a strong witness to our faith, but he does not call us to destroy ourselves in trying to convince others of our beliefs. Shaking the dust off our feet and taking our talents elsewhere is always an option. For Paul and Barnabas, it meant renewal: they ‘were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.’
