About Today Readings

Jeremiah 7:1-11. How lovely is your dwelling-place, Lord, mighty God! – Psalm 83(84):3-6, 8, 11. Matthew 13:24-30.

Let them both grow until the harvest

In today’s Gospel reading we hear about the weeds growing amid the wheat. While this could be a parable about saints and sinners, I sometimes think the wheat and darnel both exist within me. I know I have talents. I know I have goodness within me. But there are so many faults and limitations mixed in with that. And just like a weed, the same sins keep reappearing, despite my best efforts.

I take comfort in the way the gardener is portrayed in this parable. He is not concerned about the pesky weeds. He does not insist on the kind of perfection that would harm the garden. In the same way, I need to allow myself to make peace with my limitations, allowing them to grow alongside my virtues until the day when all shall be made perfect.
