About Today Readings

St Augustine of Canterbury

Acts 28:16-20, 30-31. The just will gaze on your face, O Lord – Psalm 10(11):4-5, 7. John 21:20-25.

Witness to the love of God in the world

The Gospel today is fitting for St Augustine and also fitting towards the end of Eastertide. The beloved disciple is not named even though there are four occasions where he is mentioned, all important moments towards the end of the Gospel. In the readings today we also hear the conclusion of the Acts of the Apostles. The end of Jesus’ ministry on earth and Paul’s ministry, hold a resounding message. The ones who believe what Jesus has said and done, those are the ones who will carry the message forward into the world like St Augustine, like those today who move in the world to open the word of God to all those who will listen. In our increasingly secular contemporary society in Australia, there are many who do not know Christ, who have never heard the story and so our work is real and important; to witness to the love of God in the world.
