About Today Readings

Holy Innocents

1 John 1:5 – 2:2. Our soul has escaped like a bird from the hunter’s nest – Psalm 123(124):2-5, 7-8. Matthew 2:13-18.

We walk in the light

This is a disturbing feast to have in Christmastide. While we are all celebrating Jesus’ birth, we are called to consider those male children, two years old and under, who were killed by Herod in a calculated attempt to get rid of the King who was to come.

There are many families in our world who suffer the same tyranny and the loss of their children. Jesus, Mary and Joseph become refugees. The loss of the children in Bethlehem is not in vain; Jesus is saved and so are the children.

Our God of Mercy, as we hear in the psalm, has allowed their souls to escape ‘like a bird from the hunter’s net’. In 1 John we hear that God is light and as we walk in the light we are indeed reconciled with God, not through our own efforts but through those of Jesus, the Christ.
