About Today Readings

Acts 18:23-28. God is king of all the earth – Psalm 46(47):2-3, 8-10. John 16:23-28.

He was an eloquent man  . . .

In this pen picture from the Acts, we are shown a fine display of leadership, a leadership which looks to the future of the Christian communities.

Apollos, an educated and convincing speaker, learned of Jesus from John and spoke about him to the people in the synagogue of Ephesus. Priscilla and Aquila quickly recognised his talent, but realised that he needed to know more of Jesus’ life and work. They undertook to teach him and then encouraged him on a further mission into Achaia, with letters of recommendation to those communities.

What can we learn from this small episode? It speaks of careful listening and discernment by the leaders in Ephesus. We have to admire the humility of Apollos and the honesty, awareness and ingenuity of Priscilla and Aquila.

Our families and Christian communities can draw strength from this generosity of spirit. Let us pray for our current leaders that they use these gifts with wisdom and courage.
