Ecclesiastes 11:9-12:8. In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge – Psalm 89(90):3-6, 12-14, 17. Luke 9:43-45.
Our hope lies in what God has promised
Ecclesiastes is one of the wisdom books of the Bible, giving insight to the human condition through the accumulated experience of intelligent and faith-filled people. There is a trap in youthfulness even though the encouragement is to let your heart give you joy. The trap is that whatever you do will be judged by God and the frivolous things, like dark hair, are just vanity. ‘Vanity of vanities, the Preacher says. All is vanity.’ As we get old, we can reflect on those things that are of worth, we can remember the days of dark hair, and we can regret or find joy in forgiveness and the future promised by God. Our bodies return to the earth but our spirit, our breath, returns to God. Our hope lies in what God has promised and the work of salvation is completed through Jesus Christ. Our breath can truly return to the perfection that is God.
