About Today Readings

Ss Peter & Paul

Acts 12:1-11. The Lord has set me free from all my fears – Psalm 33(34):2-9. 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17-18. Matthew 16:13-19.

Following the call of the Lord without fear

Saint Peter and Saint Paul are described as the two pillars of the Church. Jesus commissions Peter to be the keeper of the Keys to the Kingdom of Heaven; Paul is called to spread the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus to the whole world. For each one, their encounter with Jesus forever changes the transit of their life. ‘Who do people say I am?’ Jesus asks. And Simon Peter responds, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God’. Jesus names him Peter, the Rock of his church, the strength and wisdom of the new Christian community of Jerusalem.

St Paul travels hundreds of kilometres on apostolic missions throughout the Roman Empire, establishing Christianity among Jewish and Gentile communities, authoring many letters to the various churches he establishes. Their lives are filled with challenge, danger, joy and sorrow as they follow the call of the Lord. They are both martyred for their faith. We pray with the psalmist, ‘The Lord has set me free from all my fears’.
