Ecclesiasticus 51:17-27. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart – Psalm 18(19):8-11. Mark 11:27-33.
‘I will ask you a question . . .’
The first reading gives us a chance to reflect on the role of Christian wisdom in our lives, and the Gospel confrontation of Jesus with Jewish authorities can well remind us that true wisdom is from God.
And the response to the psalm – ‘The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart’ – can tell us what to think about in order to deepen wisdom in us. We may think that ‘precepts’ mean only the commandments, but when, for example, we think about the Beatitudes the ‘precepts of the Lord’ as taught by Jesus take on a broader meaning.
For our prayer today we could do no better than that of the writer in the first reading when he ‘asked outright for wisdom’ – that is, Christ-like wisdom.
