About Today Readings

St Blaise; St Ansgar

1 Kings 3:4–13. Lord, teach me your decrees – Psalm 118(119):9–14. Mark 6:30–34.

Do you keep answering?

‘No rest for the wicked’, the Bible says of eternal damnation, but the implication is that there is no rest in this life for the good either. In today’s reading, after the disciples have exhausted themselves in their ministry, Jesus takes them somewhere they can rest and eat. The people, on the other hand, still need more. So, Jesus himself preaches to them.

My wife works for a Catholic community organisation, where there are constantly people knocking on the door asking for help. The energy of the religious brother who runs the organisation is astounding – he’s always ready to respond, whatever the request or need. How does he do it? I don’t know, but I can only think that some of his energy must come from God. It’s the only way I can see that he keeps answering when so many of us might be tempted to ignore those knocks
