Immerse yourself in prayer
The psalm today is a beautiful model of prayer. When we are thirsty, the impulse is to find something to slake that thirst, and until it is done we cannot fully concentrate on anything else. If we are thirsting for God, then our prayer is intentional and fervent. If we imagine our bodies as being like dry, weary land (as in the Australian context), then we can have an inkling of what our spirit desires in pining for God. When we are able to bring our spirit into a deep mode of prayer it is like the land when the drought breaks, when the first autumn rains begin after a long summer drought. The land drinks in the beautiful rain. The land gives no run-off until the earth is saturated, and it is like that with prayer. We need to keep praying and blessing and praising God until we reach a point of feeling completely immersed.
