About Today Readings

St Jerome

Zechariah 2:5-9, 14-15. The Lord will guard us, like a shepherd guarding his flock – Jeremiah 31:10-13. Luke 9:43-45.

I am coming to dwell in the middle of you

Have you ever wished for someone to be with you, then wished for them to leave? We can all be fickle and have false expectations. The readings today are about God’s presence. God is coming to guard and save, and won’t that be a time of glory, of rejoicing. However, as Jesus reminds us in the Gospel, God’s presence among us isn’t always easy. In fact, it involves suffering and misunderstanding. Fire can be powerful and painful while it warms and purifies. On our synodal journey, the Holy Spirit can burn with harsh truth as well as comfort. So, whether God will inspire or challenge, let us welcome the presence of God’s light today.
