My capital with interest
The Gospel today has a lot to say about finance and investment – not something that is traditionally associated with the ‘poor church of the poor’. Yet Pope Francis has been getting inspiration from two female economists and sharing their ideas. He cites Mariana Mazzucato and Kate Raworth’s work as promoting an inclusive and caring economy, where ‘value’ is prioritised over ‘price’. Raworth has developed the idea of ‘doughnut economics’, where there is an ecological ceiling on the outside and the social foundation on the inside of a ring which contains ‘the safe and just space for humanity’. Alongside the Gospel, these women’s ideas can help us reflect on the things of value that we are entrusted with, and how we can use them to benefit the world and all that it contains.
