About Today Readings

St Sylvester I

1 John 2:18-21. Let heaven and earth exult in joy! – Ps 95(96):1-2, 11-13. John 1:1-18.

Endings and beginnings

It is common throughout the world to usher in the new year with fireworks. For some cultures, fireworks are said to ward off evil spirits and perhaps there is a vestige of that idea in the embrace of this colourful and noisy tradition. Today’s readings also reflect on endings and beginnings. In the first reading we are told ‘these are the last days’ but being anointed by the Holy One we live in the truth, while the beautiful words of John talk about how God was in the beginning and through him, all things came to be. The real fireworks, however, come in the psalm where we are called to ‘Sing a new song to the Lord, sing to the Lord of all the earth. O sing to the Lord, bless his name, Proclaim his help day by day.’ As we say goodbye to the old year and welcome the new, let us remember to sing our praise to the Lord.
