1 John 3:7-10. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God – Psalm 97(98):1, 7-9. John 1:35-42.
Power of names
Today’s readings are all about the power of names, or perhaps more accurately the power of finding someone’s ‘true’ name. It begins with John the Baptist revealing Jesus’ true nature to two of his disciples, which then inspires them to follow him. The two disciples name Jesus ‘teacher’, after which they are allowed to stay with him. One of the disciples names Jesus ‘Messiah’, which then encourages his brother to go to Jesus as well. Finally, Jesus gives that brother a new name, ‘Cephas’ (translated to ‘rock’), and we know him as the one whom Jesus would put in charge of his flock after his ascension.
Perhaps today we might spend some time reflecting on our own ‘true’ names for God and ourselves. By what name might we call Jesus as we pray to him? By what name might Jesus call us as he responds?
