Jesus remains active in calling each one of us to follow him. I remember walking around a bend in Sheridan Road, Chicago, in 1980, a few days before I was to start the Spiritual Exercises over the Christmas break from classes at Loyola University. Suddenly, I felt as if I were in the path of a wind tunnel, though the air was still. I realised I was being drawn strongly and needed to go to where I was staying, close my door and respond to God in prayer.
Any time I returned to Chicago, as the 147 bus rounded that bend, that experience came back. When I return to the experience in prayer, the sense of being drawn strongly to God starts up again. Jesus continues to act.
In 2001, as I farewelled a friend who had shown me around Toronto, the day before I was to start the Spiritual Exercises at Loyola House, Guelph, it was as if I heard a voice say: ‘This is our time now’. It certainly was.
