About Today Readings

Colossians 1:21-23. God himself is my help – Psalm 53(54):3-4, 6, 8. Luke 6:1-5.

The Son of man is master of the Sabbath

It all sems so petty, and Jesus’ response so sensible. In a moral dilemma scenario, a man has no money to buy food to feed his family. Does he have the right to steal food for them? A person’s response may depend on his/her stage of moral development. For those on stage three of Kohlberg’s scale, law is the absolute. The law says one must not steal. For those at level four or above there is the human right to life, threatened by starvation. Love and duty of care transcend law.

Governments can be stuck at stage three. A focus on property values loses sight of housing as a human right. Having said that no asylum seeker who arrives by boat will settle in Australia, they condemn people to insecurity and fear of deportation to danger. Others are left indefinitely in offshore detention.
