Dedication of St Mary Major

Leviticus 25:1, 8-17. O God, let all the nations praise you! – Psalm 66(67):2-3, 5, 7-8. Matthew 14:1-12.

The law of the jubilee year

On Mt Sinai the Lord spoke to Moses. You might remain with an image, a smell, a sound, a physical feeling that evokes for you what that moment might have been like. Meeting the Lord, God. You might consider this chopping up of time into chunks of seven, setting regular seasons. The declaration of a jubilee in the 50th year. God moves in the ordinary time, but the ‘jubilee is to be a holy thing to you’. God has marked it out, the community must attend to it.

A different kind of time, out of the ordinary. A reminder that our reality is not simply linear. That the ordinary is suffused with the divine. Time is not just to be filled up with activity. Sometimes it is to be filled with labour with the Lord. But not always. Sometimes it is to be savoured. Sometimes like now.
