Change is coming
Today’s Readings explore how Christ’s coming rewrites the rules of the world. In the First Reading, Rebekah (who was promised by God that her older child would bow to her younger) conspires to ensure her younger child Jacob would receive a blessing from Isaac instead of her older child Esau. She defies custom, but in doing so also helps ensure God’s words come true.
In the Gospels, Jesus is asked why his followers don’t follow traditional Jewish religious practices such as fasting. In response Jesus offers three parables, each of which points to the changes his coming will bring about. The old practices – the old cloak, the old wineskin – will no longer suffice. Jesus’ coming will bring about a new way of following God, requiring a new cloak and new wineskins.
Let’s reflect on the ‘rules’ and practices we follow that might need reconsidering in the light of Christ’s coming.
