Jesus comes to call sinners to repentance
Between our Gospel and first reading, we have a neat summary of the Good News. In the Gospel we find our diagnosis, and in the first reading our prescription. We find ourselves in the Gospel among the sinners, we like Levi are invited to lay down our sin and follow Jesus. We also find ourselves among those blind to their sin. Sin acknowledged can at least be repented of, but pride will see us turn down Jesus’ invitation without a second thought.
Isaiah meanwhile sets out the path for us to follow, the Divine Physician’s regimen. Love and serve our neighbours. Love and obey God. Here Jesus steps in to save us both from our sin and from mere moralising. He has done it all. He, the perfect man, is our light, relief and spring. He is our breach-mender and restorer. May we trust in and follow him.
