About Today Readings

Philippians 4:10-19. Happy are those who fear the Lord – Psalm 111(112):1-2, 5-6, 8-9. Luke 16:9-15.

Security is not found in walls

These readings are all challenging for me. Having grown up in a financially erratic family, I have a fairly entrenched tendency to see money, savings and good management as means to security and stability. This of course isn’t totally wrongheaded. Walls keep enemies out and offer shelter, and alliances can be wise in geopolitics. Despite these realities, throughout the Old Testament God is clear that those who place their trust in walls, or princes, will not find the safety they seek in these alone. Instead, God calls his people to trust in him, to remember that it is he, and not walls, princes or a healthy savings account, that gives security. Here we find a liberation, because the safety he offers transcends what we can scrounge together for ourselves. Like Paul, we can be wealthy whether destitute or cashed up, safe in the care of a better master.
