St Nicholas
Isaiah 30:19-21, 23-26. Happy are all who long for the coming of the Lord – Ps 146(147):1-6. Matthew 9:35 – 10:1, 6-8.
What our presence says
Gentile: Jesus, I am touched by how kind you are to people, even the difficult. I find it hard not to see them as a lost cause. I pray that we shall have more priests who are like you. But we have few vocations.
Jesus: Are only priests called to harvest, Gentile? I know that you have great compassion and visit the local jail each week. You are surely a harvester. Do you try to attract people to join you?
Gentile: Yes, I do, Jesus, but they think that working in the harvest is more spiritual and means preaching the Gospel. That’s priests’ work, isn’t it?
Jesus: Not only theirs, Gentile. But isn’t the best preaching of the Gospel done without words and just by presence? I didn’t get much chance to speak when I was arrested and killed. But didn’t even my dying say something powerful to you?
