About Today Readings

St Norbert; St Marcellin Champagnat

2 Timothy 4:1-8. I will sing of your salvation – Ps 70(71):8-9, 14-17, 22. Mark 12:38-44.

Light of truth

Today’s first reading speaks of a time when ‘people will not tolerate sound doctrine but, following their own desires and insatiable curiosity, will accumulate teachers and stop listening to the truth’. It sounds like our own era, when ‘influencers’ are a dime a dozen but truth and wisdom far more difficult to discern.

It’s good then that today we recognise the feast of St Marcellin Champagnat, who founded the Marist Brothers – an order known for teaching – and missioned them not to the ‘places of honour’ but to the poorest rural communities where they were most needed. He committed all he had – ‘his whole livelihood’ – to follow Christ where he was led and bring the light of truth where it was most needed.
