About Today Readings

Acts 13:44-52. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God – Psalm 97(98):1-4. John 14:7-14.

All will be well

I don’t know what a typical dinner discussion was like with Jesus, but on this occasion, the conversation seems oddly heavy. He’d been discussing his own imminent death and the disciples’ inability to follow or support him when he needed them to. They were troubled, so Jesus offered his disciples comfort and reassurance in the form of making gigantic claims about who he was. ‘I am the way, the truth and the life. No man can come to the Father but through me’; ‘I am in the Father and the Father is in me.’ When I read this, I imagined Jesus reassuring a particularly gloomy group of friends by letting them know who he really is. He claims an equal footing with God the Father, saying he’s bigger than their worries about their own weakness, or impending persecution, suffering and death; that even though the worst may happen, all will be well.
