Deuteronomy 6:4-13. I love you, Lord, my strength – Ps 17(18):2-4, 47, 51. Matthew 17:14-20.
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart
The first reading today seems to be written by somebody who knows me all too well. The message is simple: love the Lord your God with all of your strength. That shouldn’t be too hard to remember, should it? Then the reading goes on to outline all of the ways to keep from forgetting this one directive: recite them over to your family, write it on your hand, your forehead even. I must say, I feel like I’ve been targeted!
Because this is me. I am constantly forgetting to turn to God in love. You would think it would be straightforward to remember to love God, but I seem to need constant reminders. Luckily, as we read in today’s Gospel, when it comes to faith, a little goes a long way!
