St Mary of the Cross MacKillop
1 Kings 17:8-16. My soul clings to you; your right hand holds me fast – Ps 62(63):1-8. Colossians 3:12-17. Matthew 6:25-34.
Do what you can
Today’s Gospel is so apt for the Feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. Mary was a woman who trusted in God. It’s certainly not as though that trust made her idle. She did not sit back and think, ‘God’s got this’. She saw the needs of her day, and she did what she could about them. She did a lot. But what she did was born of her trust in God. She trusted even as she faced hardship, even as she was persecuted by the Church she loved. Mary, in the words Jesus speaks to his disciples, set her heart on the Kingdom of God. She knew the troubles of this day would not be solved by trying to control everything but rather that each of us must do what we can knowing it is God’s Kingdom, not our own.
